During its 37th session on June 22nd, 2013, which is taking place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed the Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces in China to its well-regarded World Heritage list.
Honghe Hani Rice Terraces is located at Yuanyang County in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province. The rice terraces stretch across over 64 square miles in the province of Yunnan in southern China, from the Ailao Mountains to the Hong River. It is comprised of the forest at the hilltop, villages below the forest, the terraced fields below the villages and the Honghe water system below the terraced fields.
Over the past 1,300 years, the Hani people have developed a complex system of channels to bring water from the forested mountaintops to the terraces. Hani ethnic groups mostly live in 82 villages situated between the mountaintop forests and the terrace. Come to the terraces then from far distance, you can enjoy Hani people unique architecture "mushroom" houses and the charming rice terraces as well.
Hani Terraces is a part of a farming system that incorporates livestock such as buffalo and fish in the cultivation of red rice, the region's primary crop.
