Xintiandi is a representative place reflect the local history and culture of Shanghai, it is located in the Shanghai City Center. Before Xintiandi, this area is a field of Shanghai traditional architecture, stone-arched gate with lane residences. Now Xintiandi has become a hot tourist spot combining exotic and oriental buildings and culture, offering dining, shopping, leisure and performing facilities.
The construction is unique for its antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai. Shikumen Building is a combination product of Chinese and Western architecture styles. It appeared in mid-1800's. Also, there are many gallery, bars, cafes, boutiques or theme restaurants in Xintiandi.
Xintiandi could divided into two parts by Xingye Road: the South Block and the North Block. The South Block mainly consists of modern architecture with Shikumen architecture as an accompaniment. The North Block featured with the old Shikumen architecture style, forming a contrast to the modern South Block.
