Day 1 Beijing/Datong
Take the overnight train K605 (23:36 - 06:21) or 2603 (23:47-07:01) from Beijing to Datong, the famous coal city in China.
Day 2 Datong/Pingyao (by tour bus or car) (B)
A local tour guide will meet you at the railway station and take you out for breakfast. Our bus will leave for Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastery at 9:00 am and return to the railway station at approx. 4:30 pm. This gives you enough time to walk around the downtown area where you will see the Nine-Dragon Wall and some old streets. Take the overnight train 2462 (22:39-07:19) to Pingyao, a Unesco Culture Heritage Site.
- Yungang Grottoes: A treasure house of rare and splendid Chinese sculptures enjoys worldwide fame. These grottoes are the main reason most people make it to Datong. The grottoes contain over 50,000 Buddhist statues and stretch for about 1 km east to west.
- Hanging Monastery: This monastery is just outside the town of Hunyuan, 65km south-east of Datong. Built precariously on sheer cliffs above Jinlong Canyon, the monastery dates back more than 1400 years. Its halls and pavilions were built along the contours of the cliff face using the natural hollows and outcrops. The buildings are connected by corridors, bridges and boardwalks and contain bronze, iron and stone statues of gods and buddhas.
- Datong Nine-Dragon Wall: it is built over 600 years ago, is presently the oldest and largest glazed screen in China today.
It is three times larger than that in Beihai Park , Beijing City.
Day 3 Pingyao (B)
A local tour guide will meet you at the railway station and take you to your hotel (Folk Hotel). Visit the Pingyao Ancient Town and Shuanglin Temple. Return to Folk Hotel.
- Pingyao Ancient Town: Being one of the four wholly-protected ancient cities in China, Pingyao Ancient City is thought of as the 'treasure house' of ancient Chinese architectures.
- Shuanglin Temple: Located in the Qiaotou Village about six kilometers (four miles) to Pingyao, the Shuanglin Temple is reputed to be the 'ancient painted sculptures museum'.
Day 4 Pingyao/Taiyuan/Beijing (B)
After breakfast, we will go to Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province, and visit Qiao's Courtyard Houses Complex and Jinci Temple on the way. After dinner, we will take the overnight train K602 (21:30-08:05) or K610 (21:20-05:28) from Taiyuan to Beijing.
- Qiao's Courtyard Houses Complex: The prosperity of the Qiao Family originated with Qiao Guifa who was an orphan and made a living as a servant during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1711 - 1799) in the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911).
- Jinci Temple: Located 25 kilometers (16 miles) to the southeast of downtown Taiyuan City, Jinci Temple is a combination of historical cultural relics and beautiful landscapes.
